Kids at risk from cheap toys

Parents who give in to pester power are at greater risk of buying dangerous toys that can choke or poison their children.

Child safety experts said markets and discount stores were more likely than major department stores to carry toys containing small parts and toxic paints that do not meet Australian standards.

Martin Bagnall, whose company(Sampling Technologies) performs heavy-metal testing for toy firms and government regulators, said some importers supplying discount stores ''buy as cheap as they can - there's no independent testing''.
